Back in October 2014 when I called that 914 ProDoula number to register for the Advanced Business Training, I never thought the day would come. As I stood pacing the Hilton Fredericksburg conference room, thirty minutes before the pre-training speaker, the talented Marie Lewis, and 2 hours before SHE would arrive, I was literally shaking.
I eagerly watched the doorway and anticipated those mile-long spiraling jet black tresses to swing around the corner and see in person for the first time – the Rock’n’Roll Doula, Randy Patterson.
Don’t misunderstand me – I didn’t always feel this way about her (and no, I haven’t drank the ProDoula Kool-Aid. This is truly my honest opinion!).
When I first joined “The Business of Being a Doula” Facebook page, I was floored by the lack of “doula spirit” I had come to know in the doula community. These doulas (mostly women) were cut throat, just out to make a buck, or so it seemed.
But I stayed. I saw the nuggets of wisdom that were being shared. I looked past the coarse language, which is not native to my tongue, but understood to be normal for others. Seeing a community of doulas and other birth professionals hinging on every post from this rock’n’roll spirited woman had me intrigued.
I eventually saw through my computer screen that Randy cared, and she knew for darn sure what she was talking about when it came to being a successful doula, running a thriving doula agency, and founding a doula certifying agency that is growing by leaps and bounds.
Fast forward to this past Saturday, February 21, 2015. I think my knees gave out a little when she first walked by. In the six hours we were with her after that, I realized my knees had every reason to quake in awe of the woman that stood before us.
If you’re a birth professional here to read this and wondering what the hype is all about, or if the Advanced Business Training is worth the $225 price tag, IT IS. It’s worth FAR much more than that!
Randy takes time to speak to each individual there, to hear your goals, and what you want to learn from your time together. She makes each person feel important and validated.
However, she isn’t going to sugar coat anything, and she isn’t going to allow you to be complacent. She will tug and stretch and bend you, even if she has to walk right over to you and do it herself.
But, she’s going to be the first person to give you a high 5 (of which I received and will NEVER forget!) and the first person to start a dance party and celebrate your business wins.
She knows her stuff – whether you like her or not, you can’t deny her success. I admire her tenacity, stamina, and most of all, her unapologetic drive to elevate this profession and grow it beyond all of our wildest dreams.
The details about what the Advanced Business Training covers are on the ProDoula website, you can read them here, I don’t need to repeat it.
What I will shout from the rooftops is the worth of these precious hours with Randy and (it’s true!) the ProDoula insomnia that has plagued me since I walked out of that conference room. My mind will not stop spinning about how to improve my business, and better yet, build it successfully.
Randy, if you ever read this, know you have achieved all of this and more, and I can’t wait to see and be a cheerleader for your successes just as you have been for mine before I even became a doula. I will make you proud!
